It seems to me that what Wright is pushing for is not a refurbishing at all. However, it is not demolition either. Refurbishing takes the wear and tear on an object and reverses it. The object is restored to its original beauty, or to a beauty that is greater than the original. Demolition is complete destruction. The idea I always had was that God destroys the earth and heavens with fire. The basis of this idea comes from 2 Peter 3:10-13 which speaks of the heavens and earth being destroyed by fire, after which, God will keep his promise of providing a new heaven and a new earth.

Wright, however, is stressing that the bulk of the biblical witness about the new heavens and earth describes it as transformation. There is something of a continuation, or better yet a link, between the old and new. The best example that I can think of is the transformation of a caterpillar to butterfly. The caterpillar does not stop at just shedding its skin, nor does God utterly destroy caterpillars and then put butterflies in their stead and call them caterpillars. The caterpillar goes through physical changes and becomes something completely other than itself, a butterfly. However, one cannot deny that it was once a caterpillar. Also, there are things that they have in common such as eyes, legs, and antennas. In conclusion, it is a brand-new creature.

The example of the caterpillar transforming into a butterfly is a simple way of viewing the transformation of the earth and heaven as we now have it to the new earth and new heaven that God will bring to pass, along with our resurrected bodies.
