Do Something About Torture

by Monte Sahlin, APF Representative to NRCAT

Consider showing "Ghosts of Abu Ghraib," documentary video, on your campus or at your local church the week of October 21-28.

The National Religious Campaign Against Torture (NRCAT), of which the Adventist Peace Fellowship is a member, will provide a free copy of the DVD, along with a packet of supporting materials, including a detailed Facilitator's Guide and handouts with background information and suggested action steps. NRCAT wants to help communities of faith move beyond an emotional response to the film's intensity (emotions that may include not only grief and anger, but also a sense of helplessness) to a positive and constructive commitment to faithful action.

This movie is a new feature documentary by award-winning filmmaker Rory Kennedy, 80 minutes long. It includes the familiar and very disturbing photos of torture at the infamous prison, but it also digs beneath the headlines to investigate the psychological and political context in which torture occurred and to ask critical questions about impact and accountability.

Go to http://www.nrcat.org/spotlight.aspx to learn more and to sign up your group. If you have additional questions, contact John Humphries, NRCAT's contact person, at spotlight@nrcat.org or 860-216-7972 and identify yourself as part of APF.
